Elements: Water II

This is a brand new piece. I know - I said I wasn't going to start another one until I had finished Pemi IV but I couldn't resist. You see, I had said that the composition of Pemi I was troublesome to me. Not that I didn't like it, but it seemed too much like *background* to me. One of the problems is the fact that each motif, although not quite symmetrical in its placement, lacks variation in size and color. So the assignment was to try again, but this time make sure to shake it up a bit. Well, I shook it up and look what happened!

Okay, it's just the beginning, but I'm very excited about it. I took the original motif, scanned it, and then enlarged it and reduced it. I then cut out the individual shapes from a variety of fabrics including Judy Robertson's hand-dyes and silk organza, and fused them using Teri Austin's new fusible web to a piece of Hoffman batik. I'm planning on heavily machine-quilting this one, and then embellishments of course.

Rather than writing and telling you all about it, I should be machine quilting! As always, here's a close-up view.

I like it, I like it. The variation in scale and the way you've separated the elements gives it movement and makes it seem less crowded.

Mary, this piece is very active and exciting even though it is full of those calming blues. It is definitely more atmospheric than the first one. You have to go to my blog and check out the fabric I painted a couple of days ago...it looks like the background fabric that you have used in this piece. Also, I do like Water I because it does look so tightly packed, as if it will explode. The seed embroidery is perfect. I've also just started using this stitch on a piece that I'll post later. It is terrific for adding movement to the background. Your pieces are so textural, which is very appealing to me and I appreciate those HUGE pictures.

This piece is wonderful. The colors are so calming, yet the motifs add lots of movement. Glad you decided to start on this...
